Littelfuse has introduced a series of TVS diode arrays which provide ESD protection for DC power lines in powered USB interfaces.
The new SP11xx series employs Zener diodes fabricated in a proprietary silicon avalanche technology to protect each I/O pin in the interface. These robust devices offer high surge tolerance. In fact, surge density per square millimeter is higher than that of any other Littelfuse TVS diode array.
The SP11xx parts also benefit from extremely low dynamic resistance across all of the voltage levels at which powered USB interfaces operate, giving a fast response to ESD transients. The diodes can safely absorb repetitive ESD strikes at ±30kV without performance degradation, and safely dissipate 80A of 8/20μs surge current with very low clamping voltages.
The SP11xx series arrays protect fast-charging batteries, such as those used in tablets and smartphones, from the risk of premature failure or temperature-induced damage. They limit the battery’s exposure to the fast transients which can occur when plugging into AC-DC converters, a common source of dirty power. These TVS diodes are also useful for protecting the power-supply lines in USB3.1 Type-C™ interfaces.
