STMicroelectronics – Magnetic sensor provides accurate, low-noise digital measurements


STMicroelectronics’ LIS2MDL is an ultra low-power three-axis digital magnetic sensor which has a magnetic field dynamic range of ±50 gauss.

The LIS2MDL provides accurate measurements of magnetic field strength in three dimensions. With offset compensation enabled, the magnetic sensor offset is a maximum of ±60mgauss. Noise in high-resolution mode is 3mgaussrms.

The LIS2MDL provides a 16-bit data output over an I2C serial bus interface which supports 100kHz standard, 400kHz Fast mode, 1MHz Fast mode+ and 3.4MHz high-speed operation.

The sensor also has a serial peripheral interface.

The device can be configured to generate an interrupt signal on detection of a magnetic field. It operates over a temperature range of -40°C to 85°C.

The LIS2MDL is backed by a hardware abstraction layer for the Android™ mobile operating platform, and by software drivers for the Linux operating system.
