The IPS160H and IPS161H from STMicroelectronics are monolithic high-side switches which can drive capacitive, resistive or inductive loads with one side connected to ground. They are intended for use in designs which must comply with the requirements of the Safety Integrity Level (SIL) specifications applied by functional safety standards.
Features of the IPS160H and IPS161H that support functional-safety compliance include extended diagnostics and embedded protection functions. A built-in thermal shut-down function protects the chip against over-temperature and short-circuit faults.
To minimise power dissipation when the output is shorted, a non-dissipative short-circuit cut-off is implemented: it limits the average output current, and this protects the device against overheating.
A common diagnostic pin reports thermal shut-down, open-load and cut-off events. The cut-off delay time may be programmed with an external capacitor.

The STEVAL-IFP028V1 and the STEVAL-IFP034V1 are evaluation boards which enable analysis of all the IPS160/161H functions. They provide galvanic isolation between the user interface and the power interface through two optocouplers for forward signals to the device and for diagnostic feedback signals.
